The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has sealed 11 illegal dyeing units of textile manufacturing during a special drive being carried out near drain number 6 of Yamuna in Kundli Area of Sonipat district.

Two separate teams, headed by senior officials and accompanied by local police, conducted raids on the units and sealed them while snapping their power connections.

Kundli, an emerging hub of textile and garments, has many small and big dyeing, washing units.

It has been reported that the HSPCB had identified 36 such illegal units which have been discharging dyeing waste in drain number 6. The discharge has been mixing with Yamuna near the points from where it entered New Delhi.

Navin Gulia, Regional Officer, HSPCB Sonipat said, “This is a continuous process. We shall resume the drive at other drains as well. The problem with such units is that the farmers or the small land owners rent out their premises for heavy rentals and they also get electricity connections to operate. Since they are not documented and are engaged in job works, they just lock down the premises before our teams arrive. Hence, we conducted the raids on off days.’’

Notably, mixing of effluent discharged from the industrial units in the catchment areas of Sonipat and in nearby 2 districts of Panipat, leading home furnishing hub and Karnal has emerged as the main cause of water pollution in Yamuna river. Earlier, there were incidents when Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had observed traces of ammonia as well as other hazardous pollutants in water.
